MARKET RESEARCH: DOING BUSINESS IN (FOREIGN COUNTRIES). KEYWORDS: Regional studies; country-specific; cultural; cross-cultural; training; training materials; dos and donts; taboos; rapport building; course development; doing business; business practices; manners; customs. RESEARCH: The United States Army Security Assistance Training Management Organization at Fort Bragg, NC, seeks information on country-specific training for Army personnel going overseas on training and technical assistance missions with our allies. PROPOSED TASK: The United States Army Security Assistance Training Management Organization (USASATMO, or SATMO) deploys military and Government training and technical assistance teams to US allied countries. These teams are in country for from one week to two years, and are assembled especially for each mission from the entire Army inventory. Teams work directly with the host nation armed forces or ministries of defense, and normally live on the local economy. Generally, none of the team members are regional experts, a nd most will not speak the language of the target country. Before deploying, team members attend a five day (Monday thru Friday) course of instruction at Fort Bragg, NC. The required training course occurs 20 to 21 times per year, generally every two week s. The maximum class size is 20, but averages 3 to 7. Countries represented can vary from 1 to 10, but rarely exceed 5 countries in one class. Although there is often up to 6 months of lead-time, some countries will not be identified until only 30 days b efore the class. A sampling of the trainng to be provided includes, but may not be limited to, the preparation of cultural materials to orient deploying personnel in techniques and behaviors to avoid problems and exploit advantages in doing business in a foreign country. In addition material provided to team members may address significant differences between the culture of the United States and that of the host nation; specifically those differences as they apply to the process of conducting business and living successful ly in a foreign country (the host nation). For further information all interested sources should contact the following Government Technical Representative: INTERESTED SOURCE SHOULD RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: 1.
