- Sandia National Laboratories has developed and demonstrated, using vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) technology, a biocavity laser capable of detecting and analyzing cellular constituents of blood and other fluids. This technique allows for the rapid detection of abnormal and rare (e.g. cancerous, sickled erythrocytes, etc.) cells in human or animal blood samples as well as in solid tumor samples. The biocavity laser technology is protected under several issued and pending patents. Sandia is currently seeking partnerships to successfully commercialize this promising cell-based diagnostic technology. Partnerships are anticipated to take the form of Cooperative Research and Development (CRADA) Agreements and/or commercial licenses. CRADAs are anticipated to include funds-in to the Labs and commercial rights licensed may be up to an exclusive right in a designated field-of-use, depending on the particular business case presented.
