- Description
- USPS Materials Production and Distribution (MP&D), Supply Management, provides support to the US Postal Service with regard to the receipt, storage and distribution of (1) repair parts for all automated and mechanized mail processing equipment (2) supplies (forms, tags, handbooks, retail products, etc.), and (3) equipment (lockboxes, mail sorting tables, etc.). USPS MP&D provides inventory support for new programs with duration of 5 years or less. New programs requiring warehousing and distribution support are often implemented in an independent and non-integrated fashion, resulting in higher costs to the Postal Service. Significant cost savings would result if the Postal Service were to partner and implement a standardized approach for the warehousing and distribution of inventory required for these new programs. The approach being considered by USPS MP&D involves contracting with a 3PL provider for warehousing and distribution support for new short-term Postal Service programs. This approach would allow the Postal Service to have in place a proven 3PL provider possessing the required system interfaces necessary to interact with postal systems. This approach would also provide the USPS with access to a preferred logistics company which could provide real-time cost estimates to meet requirements as they arise. Additionally, it would provide an alternative to supplier-provided distribution, thus reducing the purchasing cycle time for the entire program.
