Description
Parachute and Delivery Technologies for Deep Digger Weapons System The U.S Army ARDEC, AETC, Picatinny Arsenal is seeking information on the capability of designing and developing cost effective, secure way of carrying and air dropping a precision weapon. ARDEC is doing exploratory concept work on the Deep Digger Weapon system, a self contained, projectile based drilling device for delivering warhead to deeply buried targets. The DD system uses a series of drill and blast events to drill through rock and other hardened targets. The system will be dropped out of a fast moving airplane, cargo airplane, or helicopter. At the drop zone the DD weapon system should be able to land and autonomously prepare for deployment. Potential landing strategies include deploying a tripod for soft landing, using an explosive charge to clear overburden, and developing a penetrator to begin digging before the system lands. Accuracy and low velocity air drop are highly critical to the mission. It is also necessary to leverage currently available air delivery methods to overcome issues in air cargo missions such as wind induced drift, severe weather conditions operations, heavy cargo weight, collision avoidance, plane speed, and system breakage. ARDEC is seeking information on these topics now in the early concept development phase in preparation for a potential follow on contract to develop the delivery and landing system. Pursuant to FAR 15.201(c)(3), the US Army TACOM-ARDEC invites all interested parties to review and provide comment to this Draft Request for Proposals (DRFP) for the purpose of indentifying and resolving concerns regarding acquistion strategy, etc. The Government seeks comments from potential industry sources. NOTE: The Government does not intend to award a contract on the basis of this DRFP or to otherwise pay for the information solicited.
