- Description
- This request for information by Government Services Administration (GSA) is for hardware, software, and/or managed backup solution for a multi-OS server environment. The current environment consists of approximately 100 Windows servers, and a Network Appliance cluster running Data ONTAP version 7.0.3. The current backup is being provided by Veritas NetBackup 8.6, 3 Exabyte x80 tape loaders, and Mammoth 2 tapes. The total amount of data to be backed up will not exceed 15 Terabytes. The solution should also be compatible with Linus/Unix systems that may be added to the environment in the future. The GOALS of this request are to decrease the current full backup window to at most 10-12 hours; increase the flexibility of backups between server OS versions; increase the reliability of information restored from backup with hardware and software; and reduce the amount of time to restore information by providing an administrator interface that accurately reflects location of data. At lease one copy of the backup must be capable of being stored off-site. The Government point of contact (POC) for this RFI is Jerry Shead, 816-823-4661. Response to this RFI is requested to be no later than May 19, 2006. Any technical questions should be submitted by e-mail to jerry.shead@gsa.gov. Currently no solicitation exists, and this Request for Information does not constitute any obligation on behalf of the Government to ever issue a solicitation. Please forward all responses to Jerry W. Shead, GSA/FTS/R06/6TS, 1500 E. Bannister Road, Kansas City, MO 64131. This modification is to post Questions and Answers: 6TSA-06-JWS-001 Questions and Answers 1 ? What is the LAN / network topology? Is everything to be backed up on a single local LAN? Is the backbone 100 Mb per second or 1000 Mb per second? A) Currently there is a single vlan with primarily 100Mb backbone with 1000Mb capability available. 2 ? Of the 15 TB of data, how much is within the NetApp filers and how much is outside of the NetApp filers? A) Of the 15TB of data, the NetApp can contain up to 12TB. 3 ? What protocols are being used on the NetApp filers? CIFS? iSCSI? Fibre Channel? A) The NetApp filers are using the CIFS protocol. 4 ? Is there a defined retention period for the data? How long does the data need to be available for an automated restore? A) The retention period for the data is 7 years. The data needs to be readily available for 7 years for restore. 5 ? Is there a defined archive policy and archive period? What backup sets need to go offsite (daily, weekly, monthly?) and how long does this need to be kept (6 months, 1 year, forever?)? A) Archive policy has not been clearly defined. 6 ? Can the offsite copy be on disk or must it be on tape? A) Offsite copy can be on disk, but disk must be readily available. 7 ? Is the offsite copy stored at an archive facility (such as Iron Mountain) or at an active data center? If an active data center, what type of WAN connection exists between the primary facility and the offsite facility? A) Offsite copies are currently stored at an archive facility. 8 ? Disregarding data on the NetApp filers, how many (if any) servers have more than 100 GB of data? A) Five at the most. 9 ? Is there a defined backup schedule (e.g. Full backup on weekends, incremental backup Monday through Thursday nights)? A) Full backup on weekends with incremental's Monday though Thursday evenings. 10 ? Is there an estimate of how large daily incremental backups are? A) Unknown 11 ? How long must the current backup data be available for restore once a new backup system is in place? A) 7 years 12 ? Of the 100 Windows servers, how many have more than 2 CPU?s in each? A) 75% 13 ? Are there databases to be protected, such as SQL Server, Exchange, Lotus Notes, Oracle? If so, is this data within the NetApp filer or outside of the NetApp filer? A) Yes, SQL Server, Oracle and Lotus Notes, these databases are not currently located on the NetApp filer. 14 ? Is there an incumbent contractor for this potential requirement. If so, the following information would be most appreciated: A) There is not an incumbent contractor. 15 - How much data changes in this environment on a daily basis? A) Unsure, but it's a small amount. Maybe 20 to 25%. 16 - Do you need the capability to archive data / on what schedule / how much data? A) If by archiving they are speaking of cataloging the data, we don't have a schedule or any of those requirements defined yet. 17 - Regarding "increasing the flexibility of backups between operating systems", do you need the ability to restore files backed up on one operating system to another operating system, and if so between which operating systems? A) No restores between operating systems. Only that the same management interface can be used to manage backups on Windows and Unix and Linux OS's. 18 - Is this requirement for a 100% managed solution? If so, are on-site management services required or can off-site management be performed via a virtual private network? A) This is for a solution managed or unmanaged. Both on and off-site management solutions will be reviewed. 19 - What is the flavor of UNIX in the current environment? A) There currently is not a flavor of Unix, however the flavor most prevalent in our organization is Solaris. 20 - Will all 100 Windows servers need to be backed up individually, or is all their data stored on the NetApp cluster so that only the NetApp would have to be backed up? A) All 100 servers will have to be backed up individually, none of their data is stored on the NAS. 21 - Do the servers currently have Fibre Channel HBAs? Are there existing FC switches in the environment? A) Yes the netapps use fibre channel has but there are currently no FC switches in the environment. 22 - Is the customer interested in encrypting the tapes that will be stored off-site? We recommend that to all our customers in light of recent "tape-losing" episodes in the news. A) Yes we are interested in encryption. 23 - Is there any classified data involved? A) The data type is sensitive but unclassified. 24 - How much data is currently being backed up? A) Approximately 5TB 25 - How much data will be stored off-site? A) All 5TB will need to be stored offsite 26 - What kind of connection is required (SCSI or Fibre)? A) Unclear as to what is being asked. SCSI or fiber connections to what equipment? 27 - Is redundancy required (multiple drives)? A) Redundancy is built into the current server environment, is this question in regards to redundancy with backup hardware? Please clarify.
