Description
This is a sources sought announcement, and as such does not constitute a solicitation of proposal, and authority to enter into negotiations to award a contract for the contemplated effort has not been received and funds are not currently available. NAVSEA Indian Head Division, Maryland, is seeking sources of an electromagnet to be built to existing drawings The magnet consist of six coils. A steel metal pole is placed in the interior of the coils. Each coil will have an approximate ID of 8?, a width of 2.25 inches and a approximately 15 inches in outside diameter. Each coil will be wound with approximately 3000 feet of 12 gauge ?forvar? coated copper wire. The windings will be coated with Crest 7450 epoxy or equivalent. A steel frame assembly holds each set of three coils ten inches apart. The electromagnet will be installed in a large cylindrical tank. In one end of the tank a 3.25?, 1.6? or 4.0? ID gun barrel will extend into the tank. The gun will launch a projectile that will impact a target placed in the center of the magnetic field produced by the electromagnet. The vendor shall provide a bracket to center the magnet so that center line of magnet coincides with projectile path. The vendor shall provide instrumentation and fixtures to map the magnetic field, and a power supply to supply 20 amps of electrical current to the magnet. The vendor shall provide cables and an feed thru assembly to feed wires into the tank. The vendor will provide a system to allow the magnet to be installed and uninstalled. Ideally a fork lift would not be required. Additional capabilities that may be required are the fabrication of non-magnetic gun barrel extensions. These extension will connect to the existing gun barrel and will extend into the magnetic field of the magnet. Ideally, a design that would not require existing gun barrel sections to be shipped to an outside machine shop. Another capability that may be required is to provide target holders to align the target to within 0.0003 radians of projectile face and to measure the projectile velocity with a series of optical sensors. Ideally the target holders and velocity sensors could be easily replaced as they would be likely destroyed in each gun firing. The vendor will install the system and perform the initial magnetic field mapping. Potential vendors are requested to send capability statements to NAVSEA INDIAN HEAD, Attn: Audrey Cosgrove, 101 Strauss Avenue, Indian Head, MD 20640 or email at audrey.cosgrove@navy.mil. Capability statements shall address (1) the vendor?s technical capability in meeting the above requirements, (2) any relevant experience, previous contracts, etc, and (3) any other product/company literature that would be applicable. All information shall be provided by 3:00 pm Eastern Standard Time on May 17th, 2006.
