By developing the Primer as an online interactive continuing medical education program it will ensure that the existing information in the Primer web-based program is current and up-to-date; will provide unique graphics and learning modules to compliment the educational purpose on foodborne illness of the website. It will also facilitate maintaining and updating the Continuing Medical Education credits process awarded for this program. The Primer utilizes presentations of clinical scenarios and clinical vignettes on different foodborne pathogens. It also includes information on: clinical considerations, tables on foodborne illnesses with summaries of clinical and diagnostic considerations, laboratory tests, and recommended treatment of bacterial, viral, parasitic, and non infectious causes of foodborne illnesses, current suggested food safety resources and reading list. The Primer also contains concise patient information for physicians to distribute information. Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Education (CE) credits were also offered. The American Medical Association (AMA) is the preeminent national organization for US physicians promoting the art and science of medicine for the betterment of the public health. The AMA was the driving force for the development of the Primer with the goal of providing educational materials to the US physicians on the diagnosis, management and most importantly the prevention of foodborne illnesses.
