Description
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) requires an upgrade to an existing Coherent 890 laser. This Commercial upgrade is required in order to undertake a newly funded competence project. NIST requires Ti:Sapphire (Ti:S ) optics, Ti:S pump mirrors, and Ti:S pump power. As part of the NIST competence program, NIST is developing a very high force optical trap with minimum heating, which requires >3 W of laser power at 800 nm, with any added performance increasing NIST?s utility. To do so, there needs to be as much power out of a Ti:S laser as possible. To get the maximum power out of the existing Ti:S laser, NIST needs the highest possible laser pump power at 532 nm. Only Coherent makes an 18 W laser, diode pumped, solid state laser at 532 nm. As part of this project, NIST is refurbishing an existing Coherent 890 laser (S/N 93391425). NIST requires that accompanying this laser installation there be a complete refurbishing of this Ti:S laser, with new optics. Further, the complete system needs to be integrated and the full system shall produce at least 3 watts of laser power at 800 nm. The stiffness of the resultant optical trap is proportional to the laser intensity. It is a requirement for a high force, yet precise optical trap, with excellent stability in trap stiffness, which requires excellent stability in laser intensity noise. The new laser shall be an all solid state, diode pumped, frequency doubled Verdi V18 (Nd:YV04) laser (532 nm), proving single mode operations (M2 <1.1). Argon ion lasers are not compatible with the existing infrastructure (Plumbing, space, and electrical power). Power stability is an important requirement for the end use and power stability of the pump laser and will directly affect the power stability of the Ti:S laser. The laser intensity noise < 0.03% RMS measured over 10 Hz to 1 GHz. This large difference affects the experiments ultimate goals of producing as stiff an optical trap as power. Hence, the project requires the 18 W pump laser, and the following items: Item Number 1 Quantity: 1 Unit: ea Part Number: 1063516 Description: Verdi V18, all solid state diode pumped frequency doubled Nd:YVO4 providing >18 watts of 532 nm.
