Description
The U.S. Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) proposes to negotiate on a sole source basis contract under the authority of 41 U.S.C. 253(c)(1) with the University of Colorado for making experimental and theoretical studies to realize quantum information processing protocols using robust ion qubits. It is essential this research take place in a close proximity so that NIST and the researchers can work closely together. The general techniques involve using Mg+ ions as refrigerant ions to sympathetically laser cool Be+ qubit ions that are based on field independent transitions and incorporate particular laser detunings that prevent spontaneous emission decoherence. Using this system, the project will implement quantum computing primitives in a multi-zone ion trap. The following tasks will be completed: (1) Generate and entangle field-independent qubits and distribute to separate trapping zones. (2) Carry out quantum dense coding protocol in separate trapping zones (3) Perform theoretical studies of how to reduce decoherence in multi-zone traps using field-independent qubits and particular laser detunings. This procurement is being conducted per FAR Part 13, Simplified Acquisition Procedures (NTE $100K). This synopsis is issued for information only. No competitive solicitation is planned. Information submitted in response to this notice will be used solely to determine whether or not use of competitive procedures to fulfill this requirement would be in the Government's best interest and must address qualifications pertinent to this requirement. Any questions regarding this notice shall be submitted in writing to Ms. Rima (e-mail preferred). Anticipated award date is August 8, 2006.
