The U.S. Geological Survey has a requirement for new 193 NM Excimer Laser Ablation System, and installation. The laser shall include any computers, operation/control software, data processing software and hardware. The laser shall demonstrate high absorption for UV transparent materials, especially quartz, and the system shall exhibit sample transport efficiency with helium as a cell gas. Minimal matrix dependence on ablation quality shall be required. Ablation shall produce fine particle size distribution of ablated quartz matrix (all particles <1?m). Low depth penetration (to <0.1?m/shot) for high depth spatial resolution is critical for ablation of fluid inclusions for analysis of fluids. For controlled ablation of various matrices, full control over laser energy density from <1 to >40 J/cm2 shall be required. Magnification must be adjustable up to 400x. The ability to use custom-designed cells up to 45 mm in height shall be required. The laser system shall also include appropriate safety measures such as alarms and gas containment in the event of a leak of ArF gas from the laser cell to protect personnel in the laboratory, which will be shared with multiple users of the instrumentation in the laboratory.
