Description
The National Institute on Aging, IRP, intends to negotiate and award a purchase order on a noncompetitive basis with the University of Miami, P.O. Box 248185, Coral Gables, FL 33124 for a project on personality and spirituality in long-term survivors in AIDS. Spirituality and religiosity are concepts central to many individuals? lives, and in particular, for those individuals with long-term illness. The role these concepts play in the lives of individuals with long-term illness is certainly of paramount importance to those individuals. Our major aim is to empirically investigate how personality and spirituality affect disease progression. Whether and how personality affects survival and disease trajectory of those living with AIDS is the major question this proposal seeks to answer. These and other questions regarding the relationship between personality and spirituality are ones that has been virtually unexplored. However, Dr. Gail Ironson of the University of Miami has amassed data on long-term survivors of AIDS, measures of personality, disease trajectory and spirituality. Data on more than 100 AIDS patients who have been characterized in terms of personality and spirituality measures along with measures of CD4 and viral load are exceedingly rare. Dr. Ironson is the only person known to us that has this data. A survey of the literature in this field shows that there are no other sources for this data. The North American Industry Classification (NAICS) code is 541990 and the size standard is $6.5 million. This acquisition is being conducted under Simplified Acquisition procedures and is exempt from the requirement of FAR Part 6, Competition Requirement. This notice of intent is not a request for competitive proposals. Interested parties may identify their interest and capabilities in response to this notice is solely with the discretion of the government.
