Description
The NRC is currently evaluating the acceptability of allowing the use of polyethylene piping in safety-related portions of low pressure service water systems. A specific nuclear plant has indicated plans to submit a license amendment to allow replacement of degraded carbon steel portions of piping in these systems with polyethylene piping. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is also pursuing the development of Code Cases to accomplish this goal. In order to assess the acceptability of replacing safety-related carbon steel piping with polyethylene piping, research to obtain polyethylene piping industrial operating experience and applicable Codes and Standards will be performed and ongoing assistance by the office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (RES) to the office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR) during the course of the ASME Code Case development will be conducted. The ultimate objective of this research is to determine the acceptability of using polyethylene piping in safety-related ASME Class 3 service water piping in nuclear plant systems. The work consists on (1) Performing Literature Survey of Operating Experience - delivery schedule - November 2006, (2) evaluating the Acceptability of Existing Applicable Standards - delivery schedule - November 2006 (3) providing Assistance for NRC Review of ASME Code Case - delivery schedule - April 2008, and (4) Providing Technical Support during the Development of the ASME Code Case - delivery schedule - June 2008. The estimated duration of this contract is two years. All responsible quoters may submit a quote, which may be considered.
