- Description
- The US Geological Survey (USGS) Geologic Hazards Programs conducts basic and applied research for the nation on mitigating geohazard situations (e.g. slope creep, land slides and subsidence.) Past practice for locating new pipelines and other construction has been to avoid locations where large ground displacements were possible. However urbanization, environmental concerns, land ownership issues and incompatibility with existing land use along such routes are making such locations harder to find and utilize. As a result, public and private entities needing to locate pipeline and other infrastructure will be utilizing route corridors where geohazards cannot be avoided. This increased potential for damage brings with it the need to have better management and assessment tools to forecast and mitigate future losses. In support of this objective USGS is entering into a Cooperative Research & Development Agreement with DGH Consulting (DGHC) to develop specific assessment and informational material of interest to the pipeline community relating to ground subsidence and landslides. DGHC will integrate USGS contributions with other information being developed by engineering and scientific contributors. Funding for the guidance has been provided by Pipeline Research International (PRCI) and US Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. This is not a procurement, the partner is contributing funds, equipment, or in-kind services to the joint research effort leveraging its efforts with those of the USGS for a mission related objective. For information on the science area contact, Rex L. Baum, (303) 273-8610; email: baum@usgs.gov or visit the Program website at http://landslides.usgs.gov/research/.
