Description
The Government will make a sole source purchase of a Side Scan Sonar System from Marine Sonic Technology, Ltd., for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District. The system will upgrade the existing survey equipment currently being used abo ard many of the Districts surveying vessels. The Side Scan Sonar System will locate and record images of the river bottom and objects below the water surface in the Mississippi River, such as sunken vessels and buoys in navigation channels and waterways. This system is small, light weight, self contained and environmentally protected. It can be placed on type of floating platform for versatility. It has an internal computer system with hard drive, software that can geo-reference all images in real-time and DGPS navigation that is all internally interfaced so it can be operated off the same 12 volt power source. The imaging resolution is of a quality that a technician can accurately identify objects and or obstructions as small as 1x 1in dimension. Th e system will integrate into existing software drivers, and allow an exchange of information and equipment between the Corpss survey crews if problems and equipment failures occur. The St. Louis District, as well as many other districts within Corps of E ngineers, has several years experience with the present system. Re-training personnel with a different system would be costly, in both time and money. The Marine Sonic Centurion Side Scan is a self contained side scan unit that is powered by 12volt DC ba ttery, in a small portable environmentally protected splash proof case. This compact unit is fully enclosed in a splash proof Pelican case that measures 13x11x 6 and weights only 12 pounds. The unit has its own 300 MHz PC built into the case with a 40 g ig hard drive, proprietary software and internal display monitor. The unit has DGPS navigation built into the system for accurate location of all objects. The software allows accurate measurements of objects and are located in real time. The imaging was su perior to all units that we have seen to date. This unit can be utilized on any size vessel needed for side scan sonar investigation. This units flexibility will be invaluable during any emergency situation including surveys that will be required for kee ping the Mississippi River navigation channel open after the emergency. The system uniquely meets district requirements as follows: It is Waterproof. The system will be operated in some of the most environmentally challenging situations, including rain, wind and ice. The Centurion System is the only completely portable, waterproof side scan sonar system available on the market. It is low voltage. Due to the systems proximity to water during operations, a low power system is needed for safety of the o perators and vessel crew. The Centurion System is the only Side Scan Sonar system that can be operated using a 12-vdc automotive battery to supply power. It is the only system on the market that is powered entirely from the computers ISA Bus resulting i n lower power consumption. It has a high resolution 1200kHz frequency. Marine Sonic Technology, Ltd. is the only manufacture of side scan sonar systems that offers higher transducer frequencies of 900 and 1200kHz. This requirement is being procured und er the Simplified Procurement Threshold. Anticipated date of award is 11 September 2006. Point of contact for this requirement is Marilyn Aird, Contract Specialist, by phone(314)331-8528, or by email, Marilyn.M.Aird@mvs02.usace.army.mil.
