Description
The USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Grain Marketing & Production Research Center, Manhattan, Kansas, intends to enter into a sole source contract with Perten Instruments, Inc., Springfield, Illinois, for the purchase of one Model SKCS-4100, Single Kernel Characterization System. This instrument was developed by Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and is patented under 5,5005,744-Rapid, single kernel characterization system, 1991 and #5,082,141-Device for singulating particles, 1992. Perten Instruments has licensed this patent from ARS and is the sole manufacturer of this instrumentation. This instrument will be used to support cooperative research with the Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS) and is the only instrument that is recognized by FGIS as the official means of classifying wheat by hardness, and the only instrument that can serve as a reference method for hardness per AACC Method 55-31, Single-kernel characterization system for wheat kernel texture. It is the only instrument that can simultaneously measure single kernel quality hardness, moisture content, weight, diameter and crushing force profiles, which is a requirement for the research. The SKCS 4100 has the capability to characterize wheat samples as soft, hard, or mixed, which allows for a rapid and objective measure of class and uniformity, which is another requirement of the research being done to support breeders developing hard and soft wheat varieties. *Provide Qualification Statement by Close of Business September 21, 2006, if interested in this procurement.
