- Description
- The U.S. Army TACOM-Picatinny, Picatinny Center for Contracting and Commerce in support of the U.S. Army Research Development Engineering Command ??? Armament Research Development and Engineering Center (RDECOM-ARDEC) is conducting a Market Survey to identify potential sources that are capable of lightweight modular composite armor made up of advanced materials providing a very high level of protection for use in civilian vehicles. These lightweight advanced composite armor tiles are to be installed into civilian vehicles through the use of brackets and an installation kits without any major modification to the vehicle. These kits are to be installed by soldiers in the field with tools on hand at the user and mechanic level, not factory installed. The tiles are to be design in a modular fashion allowing for soldiers to quickly switch out specific panels that may be damaged through regular wear and tear use as well as from sustaining combat damage. The armor and kits are to be designed to protect vehicle passengers from enemy small arms fire and from potential damage sustained from anti-personnel mines. Vehicle solutions are to include both non-transparent and transparent (glass) armor material solutions. Kits are not to significantly detract from the vehicle???s capability to drive, operate, and handle in a safe manor. The armor Kits should not increase the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR)) significantly which can cause excessive wear and tear of any major components that would render the vehicle ineffective or unsafe. Kits are to be designed in a modular, scaleable and adaptive fashion allowing for the same panels and brackets to be used in numerous and multiple different civilian vehicles. Examples of potential vehicle applications are the Chevrolet Suburban, large and medium luxury sedans, Toyota trucks, Nissan trucks, multiple versions of SUV and truck utility type vehicles, and small and medium Toyota and BMW type sedans. Maximum modularity, compatibility and similarity between kits, tiles, and components among the different vehicle applications is highly desired. Primary protection areas are to be focused on and highest in the passenger and crew compartment area, with a secondary capability to expand to the vehicle engine and cargo area.
