The primary g oal of this effort is to reduce the weight of the M56 Smoke Generator for installation on the fully armored M1152A1 High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV). The contracted effort shall include the system design, prototype build, test, supportability, packaging and storage requirements, configuration management, and modification and manufac ture of eight (8) systems onto fully armored M1152A1 HMMWVs. The lighter weight design shall be capable of producing thirty (30) minutes of visual obscuration and thirty (30) minutes of IR obscuration with the option of sixty (60) minutes of visual when n o IR material is on board. The new M56 design must weight less than the 3,340 pound payload of the fully armored M1152A1 with a total weight reduction minimum of 1,260 pounds. The delivery schedule for the eight (8) systems is November 2008. GDRS was th e sole producer of all 561 M56 systems and has implemented all modification work orders.
