Description
The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System intends to negotiate, on a sole source basis, with BD GeneOhm Inc. 6146 Nancy Ridge Drive, San Diego, CA 92121 for the SmartCycler 2 and Add ?on Block. The SmartCycler 2 and Add-on Block are required to perform the BD GeneOhm Sciences, Inc. IDI-MRSA assay. The IDI-MRSA test is designed specifically for use on the Cepheid Smart Cycler 2 system with an assay time of two hours. This equipment rapidly detects MRSA. MRSA is a significant causative agent for hospital acquired infections in North America resulting in catheter-associated, wound- associated, and respiratory infections. When compared to culture methods, requiring two to five days, the BD GeneOhm MRSA test will enable the VAPHS to improve the identification of MRSA which can effectively result in the prevention and control of MRSA infections. MRSA colonization of patients and employees has been shown to be the most important predictor for propagation of MRSA infection to high risk un-colonized patients in an inpatient care setting. The SmartCycler 2 System is a rapid, real-time thermal cycler used for identifying DNA/RNA from prepared biological samples. By automating much of the testing and making each reaction site individually programmable, it is the fastest, easy to use, and most flexible system available on today?s market. With the SmartCycler 2 System, each independently programmable module performs four-color, real-time fluorescent detection. Samples are amplified and measured in the SmartCycler?s proprietary sealable reaction tubes which are designed to optimize rapid thermal transfer and sensitivity, as well as to reduce the possibility of amplicon contamination. The SmartCycler 2 System enables the detection of several targets within a single specimen (multiplex assays) by using multiple fluorescent dyes and detecting the fluorescent signal in four channels. The SmartCycler 2 System is approved by the FDA for use with the BD GeneOhm MRSA test kit. This Notice of Intent is NOT a request for competitive proposals. Vendors who wish to identify their interest and capability to provide an alternate system which will meet the capabilities and functionality described above may notify the Contracting Officer, in writing, no later than January 22, 2007. Such notification must include a complete description of equipment including narrative and capabilities described above. Responses may be sent to Kathleen.Policicchio@va.gov or mailed to Kathleen Policicchio, Contracting Officer, (04A1-H), VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, 7180 Highland Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15206. Upon receipt of any such notifications, the Contracting Officer will determine whether to conduct a competitive procurement or proceed with sole source negotiations.
