Description

The Department of Anesthesiology, VA Medical Center, Durham, NC has a requirement for a monitor for the recording, measurement and display of depth brain function during anesthesia, a critical issue for patient care. This type of monitor allows clinicians to wake the patient up faster and also to use less anesthesia with critically ill patients. Salient features of an acceptable depth of anesthesia monitor include: 1. The use of a high resolution display to provide improved visual interpretation and confirmation or signal quality, revealing changes in brain activity not seen in low resolution screens. 2. Four (4) channel bilateral frontal EEG monitoring for increased sensitivity to subtle regional changes for early warning system for impending changes in patient state. 3. Reduced susceptibility to environmental noise, longer periods of artifact free EEG for increased availability of PSI (Patient State Index) accuracy and responsiveness. 4. Displays the left and right frontal/pre-frontal EEG spectrum to show asymmetrical patterns to monitor changes in the patient's anesthetic state or differences in cerebral perfusion. 5. Density Spectral Array (DSA) to facilitate interpretation of complex EEG patterns to improve clinician's ability to corroborate and understanding the PSI. Potential vendors must be able to provide this equipment and associated service and supplies for up to 5 years.
