Description
TECHNOLOGY/BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY Drum Ring Tools: Removal/Installation Set Opportunity: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to license and commercialize handheld Drum Ring Tools: Removal/Installation Sets used for removing and installing a bolt-type drum clamping ring on container drums in a quick, ergonomic and safe manner. Background: Container drums and barrels are commonly known and widely used for shipping, storage, etc. They typically have a rigid cylindrical construction, such as steel, and come in a variety of sizes (10 gallon to 55 gallon drums for example). Over 30 million 55 gallon drums were sold in 2005. Open headed drums include a top cover/lid which is capable of being secured to the upper rim of the drum using a drum clamping ring, typically constructed from a high strength material, such as steel. This new tool set enables the user to safely and ergonomically remove/install the drum-clamping ring from the drum-head by attaching to the bolt brackets on the ends of the clamp ring. The tool greatly assists the removal/installation of bolt-type drum clamping rings on container drums and barrels safely and easily with little risk of injury from the ring slipping or from contents spilling from the drum on a user. Description: This invention is a tool set that aids in the removal and installation of drum clamping rings in an ergonomically correct posture. This invention provides the design and adjustability to handle almost any size drum clamping ring. Advantages: The major benefits to the design are that it optimizes the ergonomic postures of the wrist, shoulder, and back and helps to avoid pinching and ergonomic-related injuries associated with drum ring removal and installation. Development Status: LLNL personnel have fabricated and used this tool. Photos of the tool and demonstration video can be viewed at: http://www.llnl.gov/IPandC/technology/profile/announcement/drumringtools.php IP Status: U.S. Patent #7,134,174 covers this invention. Please visit the IPAC website at: http://www.llnl.gov/IPandC/workwithus/partneringprocess.php Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's Drum Ring Removal/Installation Tool should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1. Company Name and address. 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. 3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology.
