Description
[To request a hard copy of this Request for Proposal (RFP), please contact Ms. Jennifer Thomas, 301-228-4004, thomasjennifer@mail.nih.gov.] NCIs cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG) was announced as a three-year pilot project in July, 2003, and launched in February 2004. caBIG is developing a network or grid connecting individuals and institutions to enable the sharing of data and tools, creating a World Wide Web of cancer research. The ultimate goal is to speed the delivery of innovative approaches for the prevention and treatment of cancer; however, the infrastructure and products of caBIG? are widely applicable outside the cancer community. Over 900 individuals from more than 80 organizations are currently participating. As the caBIG initiative enters its fourth year, the NCI has the opportunity to conduct a business development effort that will expand caBIG into a technically and economically self-sustaining ecosystem that supports the broader cancer community in the coming years and serves as a model for other disease areas. The National Cancer Institutes Center for Bioinformatics and Information Technolgoy (NCICBIT) seeks support for a stakeholder development effort that would make recommendations for a process for engaging a broad spectrum of constituencies to identify the opportunities and obstacles to widespread adoption of caBIG in the future, the output of which could form the foundation for a full-scale caBIG business plan.
