- The South Bronx Job Corps Academy is a 501c3 federally funded Vocational & Educational Training Program for youth between the ages of 16 and 24. The program operates year round by ResCare Inc for the United States Department of Labor. The South Bronx Job Corps Academy has approximately 200 residential and 100 non-residential Trainees. The South Bronx Job Corps Academy is soliciting bids for the replacement of existing water heaters as per Scope of Work. A walk through has been scheduled for Thursday, May 3, 2007 at 11:00 AM. A visit to the site by bidder is required. All bids must be submitted by 2:00 PM, May 11, 2007 in order to participate in the bidding process. Scope of Work Replacement of Existing Water Heaters South Bronx Job Corps Center Summary of Scope of Work Remove and dispose of the following existing equipment: ? Two A.O.Smith 175 gallon hot water storage tanks ? One A.O. Smith 660 mbh water heater ? Existing flow switch associated with water heater ? Existing bronze hot water circulating pump at heater Furnish and install the following new equipment: ? Two glass-lined hot water storage tanks, 175 gallon capacity ? One gas-fired hot water boiler, 660 mbh heat input, 82% efficiency ? One new flow switch suitable for water heater service ? One new all-bronze circulating pump, capacity matched to water heater ? Piping, valves, gauges and controls necessary for a complete installation Alternate Bid 1: ? Exclude replacing one A.O. Smith 660mbh water heater ? Repair existing A.O. Smith 660mbh water heater Location: The equipment will be installed in the ground floor boiler room of the South Bronx Job Corps Center, located at 1771 Andrews Ave, Bronx, NY 10453, between Andrews and Montgomery Avenues. The boiler room is located at grade. Access to the boiler room is via a corridor leading to the parking lot off Andrews Ave., and via an outside door that leads to a loading area off Montgomery Ave. A visit to the site by the bidder is required. Conditions of Service: The water heater and tank replace an existing pair of tanks that are leaking, and a non-functioning water heater. They are half of a set of four tanks and two heaters that provide domestic hot water to the South Bronx Job Corps Center. Domestic hot water is used for showers and general use by a resident population of 200, dishwashing and kitchen cleanup in a cafeteria serving 3 meals per day to approximately 250 people, and general domestic hot water uses. Because hot water is required 24/7 any shutdowns of domestic hot water must be coordinated with the Center Director, or his designee, at least 48 hours in advance. In general, the best times for shutdowns of 2 hours or less would be mid morning or mid afternoon. Detailed Requirements Hot Water Storage Tanks: Furnish and install two hot water storage tanks of 175 gallon capacity each, built to the ASME Unfired Pressure Vessel Code, with a rated working pressure of 150 psi. Tanks shall be factory insulated with the equivalent of 2? of foam insulation, protected with a PVC or aluminum jacket. Tanks shall be equipped with two 2? NPT tappings for recirculation, located on the side of the tank, near the bottom, and one 2? NPT at the top of the tank for hot water out. Tank also shall be equipped with ?? or 1? NPT tappings for drain, aquastat, and temperature and pressure gauges. Tanks shall be protected from corrosion by a glass lining, and by magnesium anodes. The tanks shall be made by a manufacturer which has been in the business of manufacturing hot water storage tanks to the ASME Code for at least 5 years, and which shall hold a valid ASME Unfired Pressure Vessel Code stamp. The hot water storage tanks shall carry a 5 year warranty from the manufacturer, providing for replacement if the tank should leak during the first 5 years of use. Gas-Fired Water Heaters: Furnish and install one natural gas fired water heater (Alternate bid 1: to repair existing water heater), rated at not more than 660,000 BTU/hr input, not less than 82% efficiency, that shall heat not less than 816 gallons of water per hour through a temperature difference of 80F. The water heater shall comply with all relevant New York State and New York City codes and standards, including energy codes and air pollution requirements. The heater shall have a heat exchanger designed for domestic hot water service, made from either copper based material, or stainless steel. Burner, combustion chamber, and heat exchanger shall be designed as a unit. Joints in the heater shall be designed to accommodate thermal expansion. Heater shall be equipped with high limit controls, flame safety controls, and electronic ignition. The heater shall be built under the ASME Heating Boiler Code, and designed, built, and rated for a working pressure of 160 psi. The heater shall carry the seal of the American Gas Association, and shall be approved by Factory Mutual. The heater shall be made by a manufacturer which has been in the business of manufacturing water heaters to the ASME Code for at least 5 years, and which shall hold a valid ASME Heating Boiler Code stamp. The heater shall carry a 5 year warranty from the manufacturer, providing for replacement if the heater should fail during the first 5 years of use. It is preferred that the water heater and the hot water storage tanks be made by the same manufacturer. Flow Switch: Furnish and install a new flow switch. Switch shall be designed for water service up to 180F, and shall have electrical ratings compatible with the ratings of the equipment it controls. The manufacturer shall have been in the business of making flow switches for at least 5 years. Circulating Pump: Furnish and install a new, all-bronze hot water circulating pump. Pump size shall be in accordance with the recommendations of the water heater. Pump shall be designed for circulating hot water, at temperatures up to 180F. Installation: Installing contractor shall be a New York City licensed plumber and gas fitter. Electrical work shall be done by a New York City licensed electrician. All work shall be done to the relevant codes. All equipment to be set level, and all piping to be plumb and level, except where the piping is required to be pitched. All workmanship to be in accordance with the prevailing trade standards. All piping to be Type K copper. Soldered joints shall be in accordance with local codes. If no solder type is specified in the codes, 95-5 Tin-antimony solder shall be used. Piping to and from the heater shall be 2?. Hot water piping from the tanks shall be 2?. Drain and miscellaneous piping shall be a minimum of ??. All piping shall be insulated with 1? thick fiberglass, with an aluminized paper jacket.
