Description
TECHNOLOGY/BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY Infectious Disease Diagnostic Kiosk Opportunity: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to license a fully-automated diagnostic kiosk for infectious diseases. Background: In places where there are not enough medical personnel, e.g., forward military bases, deployed aircraft carriers & hospital ships, or even poorly-staffed hospitals during a major epidemic, there is not enough time to make a face-to-face appointment with a physician and to wait for diagnosis from a brick-and-mortar medical lab. Once an outbreak occurs, the population would amass at these treatment centers, seeking immediate services. Description: This technology provides additional capability to outbreak treatment centers and forward military bases in diagnosing individuals for infectious diseases. These kiosks can be designed to asynchronously process biological samples from as many as a dozen patients at a time. The current design uses a series of complex molecular assays that include nucleic acid extraction and real-time PCR amplification in a flow-through format. Advantages: ? Rapid diagnosis ?? Reduced feedback time ?? Higher productivity ? Can diagnose as many as 12 patients at a time ?? Higher productivity ? Fully-automated & video-networked to remotely stationed physicians ?? Lowers contamination risk to care providers Applications: ? Forward military bases, deployed aircraft carriers & hospital ships ? Civilian medical centers for disease control Intellectual Property: Portfolio of ten U.S. patent applications Development Status: The designs of the diagnostic kiosk and its internal components including the internal diagnostic instrument have been drafted. Some of these components have been tested, although the entire system has not yet been constructed. LLNL is looking for a commercial partner to help build a prototype. Go to the IPAC website to see diagram of the kiosk design http://www.llnl.gov/IPandC/technology/profile/announcement/infectiousdiseasediagnostic.php LLNL is seeking industry partners with a demonstrated ability to bring such inventions to the market. Moving critical technology beyond the Laboratory to the commercial world helps our licensees gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. All licensing activities are conducted under policies relating to the strict nondisclosure of company proprietary information. Please visit the IPAC website at http://www.llnl.gov/IPandC/workwithus/partneringprocess.php for more information on working with LLNL and the industrial partnering and technology transfer process. Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's Diagnostic Kiosk technology should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1. Company Name and address. 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. 3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology. Written responses should be directed to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization P.O. Box 808, L-795 Livermore, CA 94551-0808 Attention: FBO 150-07 Please provide your written statement within thirty (30) days from the date this announcement is published to ensure consideration of your interest in LLNL's Diagnostic Kiosk technology.
