- Description
- Synopsis for the 50mm EAPS cannon The U.S. Army, Picatinny N.J.,is considering awarding a Cost Plus Fixed Fee Contract on a Sole Source basis to Alliant TechSystems Inc., Medium Caliber Systems Division, 3309 N. Reseda Circle, Mesa, AZ 85215-9103 for the procurement of one 50mm prototype cannon in support of the Extended Area Protection and Survivability, EAPS, Program. ATK has been instrumental in developing the Chain Gun concept for automatic cannons across the caliber range from 25mm to 50mm. They have developed a hybrid cannon which would fire the EAPS ammunition, have a firing rate of 200 shots per minute and be capable of firing 3-round bursts. ATK has the ability to provide this unique and innovative concept and capability to provide the 50mm prototype cannon utilizing propriatary technology. The objective of this task is the procurement of one (1) each 50mm prototype cannon to support testing and demonstrations planned for the Extended Area Protection and Survivability (EAPS) Advanced Technology Objective (ATO) Program. EAPS is an air defense program aimed at developing a medium caliber cannon based system capable of shooting Rockets, Artillery and Mortar (RAM) rounds out of the air. An extensive one year systems analysis was conducted by the Systems Engineering Directorate which concluded that a 50mm cannon firing at rates of 200-250 shots per minute was the optimal caliber and firing rate. Preliminary ammunition design and analysis efforts indicated that a course correcting projectile housed in a 50mm x 533mm cartridge was the optimal design envelope. Test and demonstration plans for the EAPS program require firing single shots as well as 3-round bursts of ammunition. Delivery of an automatic cannon that meets these program requirements is needed by 30 Sep 08 to meet scheduled test and demonstration milestones. The POC is Kathleen A. Sage, 973-724-2564, e-mail ksage@pica.army.mil. See Note 22.
