Description
Barbed Wire - A strand of two 12-1/2 gauge galvanized wires twisted together with 2 point barbs of 14-gauge wire spaced 4 inches apart. ASTM A 121. Wire and barbs shall be zinc-coated steel, with a zinc coating of at least 0.3 ounces per square foot of coated surface area. 80 Rod Roll. The minimum breaking strength of each wire shall be 950 lb-force. Smooth Wire - A strand of two 12-1/2 gauge, galvanized wires twisted together. Wire shall be zinc-coated steel wire of at least 0.3 ounces per square foot of coated surface area. ASTM A 641. The minimum breaking strength of each wire shall be 950 lb-force. Treated Wood Posts - PRODUCTS A. General: Material shall be sound, free of decay and end splits. Seasoning checks will be permitted when not extending through the pith. B. Posts: Shall be round timber. Round posts shall be free of multiple crooks. Posts are not acceptable when a line drawn from the geometric center of the top to the center of the butt falls outside of the body of the post, or a point more than 2 inches from the center of the post. Posts are not acceptable when charred. Only one check extending to the pith is allowable. The following species are acceptable when preservative-treated for the full length: ponderosa pine, southern pine, lodge pole pine. QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Quality Indicator: Posts shall bear a quality mark or tag of a program approved by the Contracting Officer or the American Wood Preservers Bureau. AWPB quality marks shall be according to QCIP-88, Section 5. Marking of poles shall meet the requirements of REA 50-18 (DT-5C), paragraph 6.5 or ANSI o 5.1, Paragraph 7.5. B. Fabricator's Qualifications: A person required to apply preservatives must have completed an Environmental Protection Agency approved training course. DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Handling: Treated materials shall be handled to preserve the integrity of the treatment. Scrapes, punctures, or abrasions caused during this operation shall be treated with an approved preservative. PRODUCTS A. General: Material shall be sound, free of decay and end splits. Seasoning checks will be permitted when not extending through the pith. B. Posts: Shall be round timber. General: Minimum net retention and penetration shall be according to AWPA C 5. Treatment method shall be according to AWPA C 1, except as noted in paragraphs 2.03 G, H, and I. B. Chromate Copper Arsenate (CCA): Waterborne preservative according to AWPA P5 Type A, B, or C. Steel Posts - 5-1/2 foot. Solid green or green with white or silver tops. "T" type, with a welded or riveted anchor plate. Furnish with clip type wire fasteners (punched tabs for fastening wires are not acceptable). Steel posts shall be manufactured from wrought, rail, or new billet steel. Posts shall have a minimum weight of 1.33 pounds per linear foot exclusive of the anchor plate, which shall weigh a minimum of 0.67 pounds +/- 5%, and shall be a minimum of 18 square inches in area. Anchor Plate shall be 18-inches from bottom of post. Steel fence posts and fasteners shall be according to ASTM A 702. Staples - Bright finish or galvanized 9 gauge with slash-cut points.
