- 1. Major Duties: Serves as Coordinator of Music/Organist/Choir Director for the religious program at the Main Chapel, Fort Dix, NJ. Establishes and coordinates musical programs in the Main Chapel and supports the operation for the chapel which prov ides facilitates and programs for community religious projects and activities. a. Works with chaplains and clergy at the chapel to enhance, integrate and expand the role of music in worship and community programs. b. Works with chaplains and clergy in developing publicity using all the available media to strengthen and promote regular and special chapel music programs. c. Recruits volunteer choir members and musicians. Assists in basic, vocal and choral skills and ensembles. 2. Musical and Educational Requirements: a. Must submit resume with proposal, indicating experience of capability to serve as Choir Director. This position requires the services of a professional musician, both vocally and instrumentally. Undergraduate degree in music or music-related field re quired. Must possess a working knowledge of various musical formats and instruments, including but not exclusively Pipe Organ, Standard Organ and Piano, (i.e. Guitar and Hand bells). Must be able to read and perform music, and sight read music. b. Must recruit volunteer leaders for service choirs. Recruits cantors to perform as soloists and in an ensemble. c. Must be competent to direct both youth and adult choral ensembles (and hand bells, as needed). d. The position requires specialized familiarity with Catholic, major Protestant traditional services, and Gospel-style music. e. Must have the ability to compose and/or arrange festival hymn arrangements for choir, congregation, and instruments, as well as ability to arrange other musical ensembles used at Chapel services. 3. Additional Duties: a. Directs the selection, purchase and use of Protestant, Gospel and Catholic Choral Music and supervises the chapel music library card system, filing, loaning, etc. b. Supplies Monthly Listing of all services, and choral and instrumental music to be used in the chapel services for bulletins and other programs. c. Oversees upkeep of the chapel choir room, robes, equipment and percussion instruments. d. Plans and coordinates purchases under direction of the Installation Chaplain. e. Coordinates request for and evaluation of chapel electronic and pipe organ maintenance and piano maintenance with Installation Chaplain. Provides Installation Chaplain names, addresses and telephone numbers of qualified vendors for maintenance of inst ruments. f. Maintains a current list of substitute organists, guitarists, musicians, and vocalists. Arranges for substitutes and replacements for regular Organist and Musicians at least two weeks in advance. g. Auditions and evaluates all organists, soloists and choir directors and makes recommendations to chaplains and clergy for suitable presentations. h. Plans, coordinates and rehearses special ensemble groups (strings and/or brass, etc.) for revival services, during Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter Seasons, and for other regular services as required. Works cooperatively in leading join t music programs with McGuire Air Force Base Chapel and Lakehurst Naval Chapel choirs. i. Trains cantors for Catholic Mass and for special music during regular and special Masses. j. Recruits choir members and leaders to form the service choirs for harmonized singing at Protestant, Gospel and Catholic worship services. Schedules and leads at least one weekly choir rehearsal for Gospel, Protestant and Catholic services. Times and s chedules are mutually agreed upon by the Director of Music, choir leaders and chapel participants. k. Arranges for and oversees at least two childrens musical presentations per year and occasional choirs in Catholic and Protestant services. Provides music in support of Vacation Bible School. l. Arra nges rehearsals and leadership for special Gospel Youth, Teen and Adult choir presentation up to six times per year. m. Upon request of Gospel pastor, advises on qualifications of gospel musicians for possible contract service funded by the Fort Dix Consolidated Chaplains fund. n. Must be thoroughly familiar with the plans and desires of chaplains, committees, and groups in their preparation for specified services and programs. Arranges for suitable musical presentations in support of planning programs. Utilizes musical plannin g groups if available to assist. o. Compiles and arranges all Choral Rehearsal Folders and Service folders for all rehearsals and services at Main Chapel. p. Coordinates payment for special music ensembles and groups providing services at Fort Dix Main Chapel for Catholic and Protestant services and programs. q. Advisor to Staff Chaplain on organ/choral elements in worship. r. Plays or arranges for playing weddings and funeral services at Main Chapel as required. All arrangements will be in accordance with the Wedding Planning Booklet.
