Description
Background A little more than 25 years have passed since the first U.S. diagnosed case of AIDS. Although many efforts have been made to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in the U.S., Americans continue to be affected by increasing HIV/AIDS prevalence rates. HIV/AIDS is a health problem too complex for a single organization to address. Efforts must be increased to collaborate with leaders and organizations in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Partnerships are a critical component of CDC?s efforts in the Advancing HIV Prevention (AHP) initiative. Achieving CDC?s HIV prevention goals, and the objectives of AHP, requires effective collaboration and coordination with new and traditional partners. The National HIV/AIDS Partnership (NHAP) seeks to prevent the spread of HIV through the collective resources and talents of dynamic partnerships between public and private sectors. Additionally, NHAP seeks to mobilize public-private sectors to include the faith community and its leadership, to increase support for HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention in the United States through various recognition activities and events such as the Red Ribbon Leadership Awards. The objectives of NHAP are to: ? disseminate NHAP prevention messages regarding benefits of early HIV testing, prevention, and care; ? address the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS by promoting open dialogue about the disease, and support for those persons living with HIV and AIDS; and ? increase the ability of partners to promote HIV prevention awareness within their organizations and communities.
