Description
***The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has a requirement for CAST POLYURETHANE AND BORON CARBIDE POWDER SHIELD COMPONENTS to be used in the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR), Gaithersburg, MD. BACKGROUND: A new instrument is being built at NIST that will employ Polyurethane and Boron Carbide (UBC) to reduce the background present from interfering with the sensitive spectroscopic measurements. Polyurethane contains abundant neutron absorbing Hydrogen while Boron is a material that is strongly neutron absorbent. Neutron travel is unimpeded through thin sections of most materials. However, the more Hydrogen in a given substance, the more a given Neutron will be slowed down. Ultimately, the neutrons are traveling slow enough to be easily captured by the Boron. This requirement is concerned with the process of translating the full 3-dimensional specification, which is submitted in the form of International Graphics Exchange Standard (IGES) files into solid castings composed of a mixture of polyurethane and Boron Carbide powder. Twenty-two (22) sets of four (4) identical parts combine to make this portion of the single shielding system required for this instrument. The requirement also includes the casting of one (1) unique component. The recommended manufacturing technique is casting of the monolithic parts. Operations requiring machining are not recommended due to the very great hardness of Boron Carbide. ****Due to the necessity for this solicitation to include attachments (drawings), which the FBO website does not support for combined synopses/solicitations, this pre-solicitation notice will be immediately (27 July 2007) followed with an uplaoded combined sysnopsis/solicitation as well as the referenced drawings.
