- Description
- Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Information Operations and Special Projects Division (HEX), Human Effectiveness Directorate (HE), seeks to design, fabricate, and test a source circuit and antenna combination that will radiate a very precise electromagnetic signal. The signal radiated will approximate a square wave modulated sinusoid in the frequency range from three to six gigahertz. The purpose of this laboratory device is to test and apply concepts and theories of electromagnetic transient formation that have developed over the past several years. Extensive mathematical and experimental research has indicated that certain electromagnetic signals incident on materials, including human living tissue, can produce significant electrical field and current transients within the illuminated structure. These transients can provide valuable information concerning the electromechanical or dielectric structure of the material. Specifically, if the materials being studied is living tissue, analysis of the electromagnetic transiets may be able to diagnose certain adverse changes within the tissue. This effort seeks to develop an engineering method for engendering these electromagnetic transients within specific materials, ultimately including human tissue.
