Description
INTERESTED VENDORS SOUGHT TO PARTICIPATE IN A PROGRAM TO TEST RADIOFREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION TAGS AND SYSTEMS OF CERTAIN SHIPMENTS. EPA is seeking interested RFID vendors to participate in a program to test a unique use of RFID for shipping certain chemicals/materials from generator to receiver. The shipping scenario would include checkpoints along the way, including across North American borders. The project offers multiple challenges, including: Tag data should be capable of capture in an information-management system. Read range should be 5-10 feet, with 100% read capability through metal, liquid, solids, and viscous materials; tags should be resistant to environmental factors, including heat, humidity, impact, vibration, acids, dirt, and radiation; individual item tagging in a pallet packing configuration, with approaching 100% unobstructed read rate; the use of multiple storage facilities and trucking firms; tracking at choke-points along the travel route. System security is vital. Selected vendors would have the freedom to design the tagging configuration and the type of tags used, and we are looking for innovative solutions for this difficult shipping scenario. This program is being carried out under EPA's Environmental and Sustainable Technology Evaluation (ESTE)/Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program, and is a partial cost-sharing program. The project is targeted to high-risk Agency needs, and will have high visibility. Results of the testing will be verified by the USEPA and will be published. EPA will initiate and directly manage verifications of up to 10 potential vendors in the first round of testing.
