Description
A shield room is to be constructed to enclose the 1 MeV output section of the pulsed x-ray source. The room is designed to attenuate scattered x-rays and to provide a shielded, interlocked door to prevent access to the x-ray beam or scattered x-rays. The x-rays are produced by a 1MeV electron beam incident on a high-Z target. The electron beam has a peak current of 1 A at a pulse width of 1 ?s with a repetition rate of 100 Hz. The main shield room structure is not intended to attenuate the primary x-ray beam, it is only intended to attenuate scattered x-rays and to prevent personnel from accidentally entering the x-ray area. An additional beam stop will block the primary x-rays. Engineering analysis of the floor loading and seismic requirements has been done by The Delphi Groupe, Inc. This analysis shows that the weight of ?? of lead in the walls and ceiling along with the steel supporting structure does not exceed the floor loading of the existing building. The structure must be built to the design provided and anchored as shown to assure meeting all structural requirements. The lead provides shield from x-rays and must use interlocking bricks or equivalent to assure that there are no ?hot spots? of x-ray flux outside of the shield room. The door must provide the equivalent shielding of the walls, have sufficient overlap to prevent x-ray ?hot-spots? at any point while the door is closed. The door shall be electrically operated with industry standard safety features to prevent injury of any person who inadvertently is in the path of the door. Be capable of being opened manually in case of a power failure, and have interlock switches to tie into the x-ray interlock system preventing the beam to be turned on unless the door is securely closed. The Subcontractor must show at least 10 years of experience in the installation of radiation shielding systems and be able to provide references of recent, similar projects. It is preferred that the contractor has experience in installations at DOE facilities.
