Description
This request is an announcement for information/market research for planning purposes. The synopsis does not constitute a request for proposal, request for quote, invitation for bid nor does its issuance in any way restrict the Government as to its ultimate acquisition approach. The 526 ICBMSW/PKA, Hill AFB, Utah, is seeking potential sources to provide, deliver, install, test, and demonstrate an ion mill at Axsys Technologies, Cullman, AL. The ion mill performs an etching process by accelerating ions from a gas into a collimated beam and directing it to towards a work piece. The accelerated ions impact the work piece and material is subsequently removed at a controlled rate on a molecular level generating an exposed pattern. This Defense application uses an ion mill to support the Pendulous Integrating Gyroscopic Accelerometer (16-PIGA) and GI-T1-B Gyroscope manufacturing process for etching the precision grooves in the 16-PIGA Al2O3 wheel?s shaft and thrust plates as well as the GI-T1-B thrust pads. The current etching process is performed by a Veeco model 301 Ion Mill. Milling consists of etching grooves that are 35-50 millionths of an inch deep with extremely tight tolerances. The machining is so precise that there is zero room for error. This etching process is critical to the production and repair of the 16-PIGA float build in support to the Minuteman Weapon System. The parts are made of I-400 Beryllium, a hazardous material with stringent safety requirements. Close coordination with Axsys is essential to ensure that all facility requirements are met. Requirements will include procuring an ion mill, developing a process to ion mill grooves on the 16-PIGA shaft, thrust plates and the GI-T1-B thrust pads and re-qualifying the 16-PIGA float and GI-T1-B wheels. Contract work must demonstrate the ion mill system robustness, repeatability and transition into production. Proper integration of these parts into the next higher assembly is critical to the performance of these inertial instruments. THIS NOTICE IS NOT A REQUEST FOR PROPORSALS (RFP). Firms responding to this announcement should include company name, cage code, point of contact, address and indicate whether they are a small business, 8(a) concern, veteran-owned small business, service-disabled veteran-owned small business, HUBZone small business, small disadvantaged business, or women-owned small business. Potential offerors should submit a Statement of Capability (SOC) that addresses the offerors ability to provide the above requested unit. The Government reserves the right to set-aside any subsequent acquisition based upon known sources and/or responses to this synopsis. SOCs may be submitted by facsimile at 801-775-2116; e-mail: dustin.huler@hill.af.mil; or mailed to 6014 Dogwood Ave, Bldg 1258, rm 26 Hill AFB Ut 84056-5816, Attention: Dustin Huler. Responses must be received not later than close of business (COB) 4:00pm 1 Oct, 2007. Identify your response with the corresponding Program Title: Sources Sought: Ion Mill.
