Description
The Government is in need of supplies and services to provide highly realistic vocational training through exercises requiring the student to perform basic electronic tasks. Trainers consist of a computerized instructional device with the capability for computer-based instruction and hands-on practical exercise training. The Basic Electronics Maintenance Trainer (BEMT) will be a stand-alone, non-system training device designed to support the training of students in all aspects of basic electronics, including theory and hands-on application. The BEMT will provide a highly realistic training environment through various training scenarios, that will require students to perform basic electronics tasks and allow instructors and administers to assign les son modules to either a class of students or individual students as well as track their progress. The standard system configuration classroom components will be an Instructor Operation Station (IOS) networked to multiple Student Stations (SS) and various test consoles and diagnostic equipment to support the MOS skills being trained. The BEMT will sup port critical basic electronics training at Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) institutions, National Guard and Army Reserve readiness training sites for more than 40 Military Occupational Specialties (MOS). The system will be configured with Commerc ial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) equipment consisting of computer aided instructional devices (CAI), and have the capability for computer-based instruction, traditional text based learning, and hands-on practical exercise training. The SS will consist of a personal computer running proprietary software connected to the system training console. The system will use associated training circuit cards to build experiments designed to demonstrate principles of electricity/electronics, au tomated power supply adjustments, fault insertion, fault clearing, and process monitoring. In the stand-alone mode, power and faults will be manually inserted. The BEMT will allow students to diagnose and/or locate fault insertion using Test, Measurement , and Diagnostic Equipment (logic probes, multimeters, oscilloscopes, function generators). The system must allow the instructor to lead students through a training scenario and then engage in hands-on practical exercises to reinforce the concepts. The IOS will host all of the student records, lesson assignments and monitoring software. Additi onally, the BEMT will include the capability to use computer aided instruction software to allow students the ability to engage in self-paced study. The IOS is required to have control of the training system and collection of student performance data. Th e IOS will also provide the capability to create and modify the learning environment and monitor student performance. The system operation will require students to have a pre-wired AC/DC power supply system, an input-output system and an in-circuit faulting system. The test console should contain two selectable, pre-set DC power supplies, an AC power supply, and three s ites of connectors (receptacles) for insertion of printed circuit (PC) cards. Experiment circuits, will be produced by inserting up to three PC cards into the PC connectors, with the capability to be faulted instantly to provide realistic, comprehensive t roubleshooting experience. DC voltages should be selected by a simple control that can be monitored on the built-in LED indicator and an illuminated LCD display. The BEMT must provide continuous safety monitoring, and the ability to interrupt the experiment in the event of shorts, misuse, or current overload. The BEMT safety and health hazards will be limited to and/or not greater than tripping hazards from netwo rk cables, sharp edges from tables or obvious office/classroom facility furniture/equipment and potential electrical shock hazards. BEMT components will be networked via ethernet cables along with multiple power and co mmunications cables. All cabling will be routed and bundled as necessary to keep wires and cables away from pedestrian traffic areas in the training facility to prevent injury and/or system damage. All parts should be grounded through the main power cabl es to the ground terminals. Power cables must be of sufficient size to carry the required current. PVC cabling shall be avoided where possible. The training console must be able to accommodate 26 Volts DC (or greater). The residual hazard of tripping wi ll be of marginal severity with remote probability (lowest risk). The primary objective is to provide a system that meets the mission need and is supportable at the lowest life-cycle cost.
