Description
Under the authority of FAR 6.302-1, the U.S. Army, REDCOM, Natick Contracting Division, Kansas Street, Natick, MA on behalf of the United States Army Soldier System Center, Natick, MA intends to negotiate and award a purchase order to Penn State Un iversity for a study invloving the Effects of Calorie Restriction on Adipokine Signaling in regulation of Growth Hormone Release to be conducted with mice subjects. The purpose of this study is to (1) determine the mechanism(s) controlling the function of distinct cellular populations within the brain in response to alterations in adipokine expression following CR and (2) to explore the neuroendocrine responses to short-term CR. This research is in support of the Military Performance Division at the US Army Research Institute of Enviornmental Medicine (USARIEM). The subject matter experts (SME) at Penn State are being contracted for the work on this protocol for the following reasons: (1) Penn State has established a heterogeneous mouse model within thei r barrier facility, which more accurately represents the diversity in the human population (2) SMEs at Penn State have extensive knowledge and resources necessary for the critical techniques used to complete this investigation quickly and efficiently. < BR>(3) USARIEM does not have the necessary equipment to perform some of the more expensive and laborious techniques necessary for completion of this project. (4) Penn State has a long-standing consulting relationship with Dr. We Hymer from Alpha Two Con sulting. He is a renowned expert in pituitary gland function. The potential information gained from Dr. Hymers investigation of the pituitary gland responses to CR has significant military relevance to Soldiers during special operations. (5) The SMEs have extensive experience and expertise associated with CR. Questions concerning this acquisition may be addressed to the above address, Attention: Mr. Nate Jordan (AMSRD-ACC-NS) or by e-mail at nathan.c.jordan@us.army.mil. This synopsis expires 14 Jan uary 2008 at 10:00 AM ET.
