Description

The U.S. army Corps of Engineers, New York District intends to issue a sole source modification to an existing contract through a Justification and Approval document to perform additional maintenance dredging with placement of the material dredged al ong the shoreline at Gilgo Beach. The sole source modification to the existing contract, W912DS-07-C-0027, with Weeks Marine Inc., is being issued to rehabilitate highly eroded beach areas at Gilgo Beach which provide protection to Ocean Parkway and have r eceived emergency funding. These two highly eroded areas along Gilgo Beach which requires a total of about 100,000 cubic yards of sand can be identified as survey stations 70 +00 to 90+33 and 110+33 to 120+33. The use of the sole source modification to the existing contract is based on the availability of the on-site contractor to perform this beach erosion control work in a timely manner. The eroded dune line areas are just south of Ocean Parkway, which serves as a Coastal Hurricane/Emergency Evacuation ro ute. Therefore, it is extremely important that the eroded areas be provided with a level of shore protection promptly, in order to prevent an increase in erosion in areas that could lead to a potential impact to the critical infrastructure. A Justification and Approval document is being prepared to support the Government position that this is the most efficient method of performing the work in a timely fashion.
