- Description
- SOURCES SOUGHT NOTICE ALTERNATIVE USE FOR HISTORIC BUILDINGS, BUILDING 521, NAVAL STATION GREAT LAKES LAKE COUNTY, ILLINOIS This notice is not a Request for Proposal (RFP); it is a solicitation to invite interested parties to submit information that explores in depth all viable, practical and feasible options for utilization, including but not limited to: reuse, lease, rehabilitation, preservation banking, mothballing, disassembly and movement off base, disposal, and/or demolition of Building 521. The public is invited to propose suggestions for feasible reuse alternatives that take into consideration issues related to the limited access to this secured area, the nature of the Navy personnel training mission surrounding the structure, and potential limitations on adaptive reuse of the building as an eligible property. Proposed actions associated with this facility have the potential to result in an adverse effect to this historically eligible property. BUILDING 521, GUNNERS MATE SCHOOL, was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) and completed in 1954. The architectural character and design of the structure are significant both for its aesthetic appeal and for its specialized, functional design. The building is individually eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Located in the heart of the Training Support Center (TSC), Building 521 is a 96,000 square foot, four-story, square, glass-box building with a three-story classroom building contained within the structure. The facility was used to train gunners mates on massive gun trainers that were previously located on either side of the classroom. This building is located outside the Naval Station Great Lakes Historic District. A public meeting will be held by the Navy on Tuesday January 29, 2008 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Visitor Center (Building 6130 - Badge and Pass) at Naval Station Great Lakes, Farragut Ave., Great Lakes, IL., 60088, (847-688-5648), at which time any person is welcome to attend and be heard on this matter. Interested parties must make written comments (via mail or e-mail) by Wednesday February 13, 2008: NAVFAC MW Attn: Maria Sus, Cultural Resources Program Manager 201 Decatur Avenue, Building 1A Great Lakes, IL 60088 847-688-2600 x. 1364 maria.sus@navy.mil This sources sought announcement is for information and planning purposes only and is not to be construed as a commitment by the Navy, implied or otherwise, to issue a solicitation or award a contract. An award will not be made based upon offers received in response to this notice. The Navy will not be responsible for any expenses incurred regarding any effort expended in responding to this notice.
