Description
The primary purpose of this position is: To serve as a Medical Technologist in the clinical laboratory with responsibility for performing medical laboratory diagnostic testing and overseeing procedures in all duty sections in accordance with the current operating instructions to include the following sections: clinical chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, serology, phlebotomy, shipping, and other sections as the laboratory's scope of testing changes. Other sections may include but not be limited to blood bank, coagulation, and microbiology. Independently performs a wide variety of procedures including sample collection, sample handling, accessioning, and test performance ranging from routine to very difficult and highly complex analysis utilizing manual and automated methods in the Chemistry, Serology, Hematology, and Urinalysis sections including specimen receipt, preparation, analysis, and reporting of results. Performs routine and complex procedures, but not limited to, in the chemistry, serology, hematology, and urinalysis sections to include the operation of advanced instrumentation and evaluation of abnormal results. Perform tests classified as high priority (STAT or ASAP) needing rapid turnaround times. Operate complex analyzers, microscopes, centrifuges, incubators, balances, analytical scales, spectrophotometers, and similar laboratory instruments. Calibrates, standardizes, troubleshoots, and maintains the equipment in accordance with manual specifications and standard procedures to ensure proper functioning to perform laboratory testing. Monitor the section quality control (QC) program. Collects and sends QC data to appropriate agency for evaluation. Resolve and properly document any QC discrepancies and reports any unresolved QC problems to the supervisory technologist. Screens patients and collects and processes specimens for testing. Ensure proper collection and processing of specimens for reference laboratory testing.
