Description
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) intends to negotiate, on a sole source basis, with the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology (CLO), 159 Sapsucker Woods Road, Ithaca, NY 14850, for six educational kiosks that will be placed at wildlife refuge centers to educate visitors in bird watching, & interpretation. The eBird Trail Tracker kiosk combines site maps, audio, video, still photos, and up-to-date sightings information that is collected by the CLO for use in research and monitoring programs. Project Nest Watch and Project Feeder Watch are nation-wide, non-formal citizen science programs for individual and families that can be adapted to refuges and visitor centers. These programs use sighting and monitoring information from volunteers to collect data on bird distribution, migration, and abundance, while educating visitors, volunteers and Friends about birds. Bird Sleuth and Celebrate Urban Birds are bird focused curricula, and include an important citizen science component that use birds as a vehicle for science inquiry. The kiosks and programs provided by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology contain a unique bird-based inquiry-based education components for adults and children that, when combined with the citizen science programs, provide data that can be used by Service and non-Service biologists, ecologists, and researchers to study bird distribution, abundance, and other aspects of conservation biology. The total estimated amount of this acquisition is approximately $50,000. See Note 22.
