Description
The need for Naval Integrated Power Systems (IPS) for surface ships and submarines will increase in the coming decades with the increased projected propulsion and ship service power demands for future combatants with advanced sensors and weapons such as railguns and lasers. The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has stood up the Electric Ships Office, with the mission of providing smaller, simpler, more affordable, more capable ship?s power systems for all Navy platforms by defining common open architectures, developing common components, and focusing Navy and industry investments. To meet the need of future ship designs, the Navy is investing in Next Generation Integrated Power System (NGIPS) technology. Additionally, to promote commonality and acquisition efficiency, the Navy plans to implement NGIPS using an Open Architecture Business and Technical model. The NGIPS evolutionary development approach improves on existing IPS Systems, and inserts technologies as they are ready into ship acquisition programs. The document attached to this announcement is the NGIPS Technology Development Roadmap (Ser 05D/349 dated 30 Nov 2007). This is intended to be a guide for future investments by the Navy, academia, and the private sector to achieve the vision of implementing NGIPS related technologies. The Navy initiated an effort with the lead surface combatant and submarine shipyards to provide their feasibility and risk assessment of future shipboard electrical system architecture alternatives. The shipyards developed a report entitled ?Shipyard Team Review of Next Generation Integrated Power System Architectures? (NGIPS/TR-09-07/001). In order to control access to this document (marked Distribution Statement D - Distribution authorized to the Department of Defense and U.S. DoD contractors only ? Critical Technology), it can only be received by written email request to lori.odowd@navy.mil. For information in this regard, the Navy point of contact is LCDR John Stevens, who can be contacted be email to john.d.stevens3@navy.mil. PLEASE NOTE: While a solicitation number has been assigned to this notice it is only for administrative purposes. No solicitation is planned at this time.
