- THIS IS NOT A NOTICE OF SOLICITATION. IT IS A REQUEST FOR INFORMATION (RFI) ONLY. In responding to this notice, please refer to ?Space-Qualified Antenna Gimbal for CONNECT? Send information/literature/qualification statement no later than February 26, 2008, to the e-mail or postal address as provided herein. NASA does not intend to award a contract based solely on this information. A future solicitation will be issued. This RFI is for planning purposes to obtain technical and business information relative to the goals set forth below. NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) is seeking information about space-qualified antenna gimbals to be used on the CONNECT Project. The CONNECT Project is an advanced communications flight project that will demonstrate software-defined radios on an external ISS pallet. The CONNECT flight payload will require a gimballed antenna to communicate with the NASA Space Network. The information received from this RFI will be used by NASA to identify potential vendors for procuring the space-qualified gimbal required. In general, the antenna gimbal will be required to enable the Ka-band antenna to be positioned within a full hemisphere of rotation (i.e. +/- 90? of rotation in both azimuth and elevation). The gimbal will be required to support up to ten pounds of antenna weight both in the powered and unpowered state. The gimbal will also be required to slew at a rate of approximately 1? per second at an angular resolution of 0.1?. Additionally, the gimbal will required to support Ka-band rotary joints and microwave waveguide through the gimbal structure and rotary stages. The drive electronics and control unit must also be supplied with the gimbal, and to the extent available, compatible with a standard 1553 spacecraft interface. Alternative interfaces will also be considered. At its discretion, NASA may request further discussions and/or clarification of the information submitted in the February 2008 time frame. If agreeable to both parties, such discussions may take place via teleconferencing or on-site visit to GRC at the responder?s expense. Discussions will consist of vendor presentations and subsequent discussions of the presented material only. Representatives from NASA and its Contractors may be present for such discussions. 4. Potential Offerors are also requested to include any relevant questions or issues regarding the above stated gimbal requirements.
