- Description
- The United States Department of Transportation, Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA), John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center), plans to issue a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) on or about February 28, 2008. The BAA describes the RITA/Volpe Center solicitation for field test sites in combination with technologies and applications to test and evaluate intelligent transportation systems (ITS) in field environments as part of SafeTrip-21. The objective of establishing SafeTrip-21 test sites is to expand and accelerate the U.S. DOT?s Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) initiative, and build upon ITS research into the application of electronic information, navigation, and communications technologies to further national transportation goals for reducing motor vehicle crashes, alleviating traffic congestion, enhancing transit use and ride sharing, promoting motor freight efficiency and safety, enabling convenient electronic payment options, moderating environmental impacts, and reducing unnecessary motor fuel consumption in both urban and rural settings. SafeTrip-21 seeks to explore and validate the benefits that can be derived providing travelers, drivers and transit and commercial motor vehicle operators with real-time ITS information, navigation, communication, and electronic payment and other services in integrated, operational, urban and rural settings. Through this BAA, the RITA/Volpe Center seeks field test sites and deployment-ready ITS applications and technologies that will lead to transformational changes and advances in transportation safety, mobility, environmental stewardship, energy independence, and security in the United States. Participation in the SafeTrip-21 test sites will also include active participation in the ITS World Congress in New York City during November 2008 to showcase ITS applications associated with the test sites through operational displays involving field site personnel and to promote widespread SAFE TRIP-21 awareness and interest among public sector transportation officials and stakeholders.
