Description
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), NIH has a requirement for the production and delivery of adult worms, cercarie, and eggs of Schitosoma mansoni. The successful offeror MUST be able to deliver live adult worms within 2 hours; live cercariae within 45 minutes after they have been harvested to ensure viability; and Schitosoma mansoni eggs (NMRI strain) within 24 hours of preparation to the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. An annual quantity of 72,000 adult worms of Schistosoma mansoni is required. Any quantity required above 72,000 will be obtained via contract options in quantities of 500 per option with a total 12 possible options. A minimum quantity of 1500 per week and a maximum quantity of 2000 per week is anticipated for planning purposes. When different isolates are requested at the same time, the total number of worms and/or the number of mice perfused per week for the worms will not exceed 2,000 worms or the number of mice needed to obtain 2,000 adult worms (approximately 25-30 mice is needed). An annual quantity of 20,020,000 cercariae of the Schistosoma mansoni strains is required. A minimum weekly quantity of 350,000 and a maximum weekly quantity of 500,000 is anticipated for planning purposes. An annual quantity of 39,000,000 Schistosoma mansoni eggs (NMRI strain) isolated from tissues of infected mice is required. A minimum weekly quantity of 750,000 and a maximum weekly quantity of 1,000,000 is anticipated for planning purposes. The offeror shall be responsible for providing approximately 40 hours per week of pathology services. A fixed price contract for these services is contemplated. NIAID intends to award a one year contract beginning on July 1, 2008 with the option for four additional contract years. Any contract awarded will be subject to DHHS regulations regarding the use of animals in research. The animal care must be in accordance with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, NIH publication No. 86-23, Revised 1996. The Request for Proposals is expected to be issued on or about March 7, 2008.
