- Description
- The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) has conducted large-scale explosion experiments to evaluate the strength characteristics and air-leakage resistance of various mine ventilation control structures including seals. Ventilation seals are used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. The seal design evaluations are conducted within the multiple entry section of the PRL Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) or within two test chambers located within the LLEM. The large-scale underground chambers are used to conduct static loading tests either through the use of pressurized water (hydrostatic or hydraulic testing) or the confined ignition of flammable concentrations of methane.
