- The U. S. Army Research Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) is seeking technical information on Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) Altimeters that will provide the Military Free Fall (MFF) parachutists more accurate and dependable equipment tha t will operate in a manner similar to currently used Automatic Activation Devices. The Altimeter will be used as part of the MFF parachutist equipment providing the parachutist real time altitudes during free fall and under canopy. The altimeters will be used at altitudes as high as 40,000-ft Mean Sea Level during the conduct of High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) and High Altitude High Opening (HAHO) operations. The Altimeter shall have the following key performance capabilities: (Threshold (T) is a must-meet criterion; Objective (O) exceeds criterion.) 1) The Altimeter will be required to have a accuracy of +/- 250 feet up to 35,000 feet MSL (T), Accurate +/- 100 feet up to 35,000 feet MSL (O) (2) Shall be operable at up to 4 0,000-ft Mean Sea Level (MSL) (T) shall be operable at up to 45,000-ft MSL (O). (3) Shall be operational in an extreme environment of -60 to + 150 degrees Addition performance capabilities: (4) Electroluminescent back light capabilit y (T/O) (5) Capable of being worn in multiple configurations hand, wrist and chest (T/O). (6) Must maintain accuracy for a period of 180 days of normal usage before requiring chambering (T/O). (7) Must be able to have minor calibrati on conducted by Parachute Rigger (T/O). (8) Must not require chambering less then 120 days (T). (9) Must be capable of setting pre determined DZ Altitudes (T/O). (10) Must be capable of being chambered using current AR2 chamber technolog y (T/O). (11) Possess low battery warning system (T/O). (12) Altimeter weight should be no greater then the weight of the current MA-230 altimeter plus ten percent (T), Altimeter Wiehgt should be equal to or less than the weight of the curr ent MA-230 altimeter (O). (13) Altimeter should pass Transit drop tests in accordance with MIL-STD-810F 516.5 Procedure IV (T/O). (14) Should not require the use of special tools to change the battery / batteries. (15) Must be capable of storage and transportation using currently established procedures. Additional Attributes: (16) Possess data logger technology (17) Should use a readily available power source, AA / AAA type batteries. (18) Use digital technol ogy (19) Posses a method of attaching chemlights as a backup light source (T/O) At this time, RDECOM is seeking sources, technical, and product information for an Altimeter that meets the Army's requirements.
