Description

The Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery in Underwood Washington spawns 8,000 to 10,000 fish annually with a total weight of over 200,000 lbs. Carcasses need to be picked up daily through out the spawning season of September 15 through October 5th. The current program involves contracting with a trucking firm to transport spawned out carcasses to a rendering plant in Warrenton, Oregon where the product has been used to produce bio-blocks for stream enrichment projects. Because these fish are anesthetized with a chemical called MS-222, they are not fit for human consumption. Consequently, they need to be disposed of appropriately and final use of this product would have to be approved by Region 1 of the Fish and Wildlife Service. Other sources are currently being sought that may be interested in the use of this product.
