Description
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute on Aging (NIA), intends to negotiate a nine-year contract with Coriell Institute for Medical Research to provide support for the maintenance of an Aged Cell Bank. The Aging Cell Repository was established at the Coriell Institute for Medical Research (then known as Institute for Medical Research) in June, 1974, by the Aging Branch, NICHD (later to become the Institute on Aging) through contract N01 AG 4 2865. The repository continued at the same location from January 1, 1980 through January 31, 1986 as contract N01 AG 0 2100. The contract was competed and continued at the same location from February 1986 through January 31, 1991 as contract N01 AG 6 2109. The contract was competed and continued at the same location from February 1991 through January 31, 2000 as contract N01 AG 1 2101, and again from 2000 to 2009 under contract N01-AG-0-2101. The specific requirement to be accomplished by this contract is for the Contractor to continue to establish, characterize, store and distribute normal and genetically marked cell lines for aging research. The importance of this resource lies in the unique collection of cell lines for aging research and the research opportunities they present. Statutory authority: The appropriate statutory authority is 41 USC 253 (c) (1), as set forth in FAR 6.302-1. The cited authority is applicable because due to the risk of moving the repository, and the costs associated with such a move, there is only one responsible source that will satisfy agency requirements. Coriell Institute for Medical Research has the highest possible qualifications to carry out the work in this contract, as exemplified by their past performance over the past 35 years.
