Description
The Office of Naval Research is issuing a Request for Information (RFI) and scheduling an Industry Workshop to fulfill the requirements set forth below. Acquisition and life cycle cost reduction is a Navy priority for future submarine platforms. Accordingly, ONR has established the Electric Actuation program under the Enterprise Platform Enablers (EPE) Future Naval Capabilities (FNC) program to support affordable technology insertions to satisfy this need for submarine control surfaces. Current controls are hydraulic/mechanical, requiring additional piping systems and ancillary systems that contribute significantly to weight, cost, and maintenance efforts. ONR is exploring the future role of electric actuation in submarine control surfaces and intends to pursue developments in this area under the EPE/FNC. The objective is to replace today’s legacy control actuation systems with affordable, power dense technology insertions. Potential benefits include construction and in-service cost reduction through elimination of shipboard hydraulic systems. Significant challenges include the achievement of a high torque/force density while maintaining stringent requirements for noise and shock tolerance; and, for those portions of the system external to the pressure hull, reliability and long life in a marine environment. This RFI is for planning purposes only and shall not be construed as a request for proposals, solicitation, or commitment on the part of the Government to issue any future solicitation. The Government will not reimburse any costs associated with the development and submission of materials in response to this request.
