Description
Request for Information Program: 60mm Direct Lay Pointing SystemCategory: Legacy SustainmentPM Office: PM MortarsARDEC Office: Mortars and Common Fire Control This is not a notice for a solicitation. This is only a Request for Information (RFI). The government does not intend to award a contract or any type of agreement on the basis of this RFI or to otherwise pay for the information solicitated under this RFI. This is NOT a request for proposal or an invitation to bid but merely a request for information. Purpose: The government would like to query industry for technological solutions and expertise to address the need to improve accuracy when using the U.S. 60mm mortar in handheld, direct-lay mode. Overview: Handheld Direct Lay mode is the method of engagement utilized when a target objective is in close visual proximity of the mortar and it is necessary for rapid engagement. The gunner kneels directly behind the barrel, supporting the tube with one hand and holding the trigger with the other. An assistant gunner preps the round and inserts it into the tube. The gunner lays the weapon using the range indicator assembly and sights over the muzzle for azimuth before trigger firing the weapon. The current range indicator assembly utilizes a simple slip indicator in which a ball moves up and down in a vial as the mortar is elevated and de-elevated. There are reference markings along the slip indicator which indicate to the gunner the approximate distance his rounds will impact based on the elevation the tube is being held at. The drawbacks of the current system are: the use of tritium, inability to upgrade/update with new mortar ammunition, and the location of the range indicator which does not allow a soldier/marine to simultaneously determine range and azimuth. Objective: The Direct Lay Pointing System (DLP) is envisioned as a replacement for the existing range indicator system currently employed on the 60mm mortar. The primary objectives are to improve accuracy, provide multiple round capability, and the ability of the soldier or marine to use the system while maintaining alignment on target. Key Parameters: The DLP should be small, rugged, lightweight, and cost-effective.The DLP should be able to determine impact distance for a variety of mortar rounds and charges based upon the inclination of the mortar tube. The DLP should be mountable on a U.S. 60mm mortar system in such a manner it the gunner can determine his range while maintaining alignment on target. The DLP must be able to meet all MIL-810F environmental standards as well as survive under the standard operational conditions of a U.S. 60mm mortar. (E.G. high shock, high temperature environment)The DLP should be day/night readable. RFI responses will be accepted in electronic submission. All proprietary and restricted information provided in response to this synopsis should be clearly marked. Responses should indicate if the vendor is a large or small business. Please ensure you have included your e-mail address, mailing address and telephone number in the body of the response. All responses shall be in the Englishh language. Responses must be submitted to Marcus Edmundson at Marcus.Edmundson@us.army.mil. Responses are due on or before May 21, 2008.
