- Description
- Tuberculosis (TB) kills approximately two million people per year. Of the estimated two billion people infected with TB, eight million develop the disease annually. The disease threatens the poorest and most marginalized groups, disrupts the social fabric of society, and slows or undermines gains in economic development. Ninety-five percent of all TB cases and 98% of all TB deaths occur in developing countries. The goal of USAID’s TB program is to halve TB prevalence and death rates in USAID assisted countries by 2015. By 2011, the objective is to achieve and sustain case detection of 70% and the successful treatment of at least 85% of those detected cases in USAID priority countries. These objectives will be reached through the introduction and expansion of proven interventions in line with the WHO-recommended STOP TB Strategy, and they fully support the objectives and targets set forth in the STOP TB Partnerships Global Plan to STOP TB 2006 – 2010. USAID will continue to support and expand current efforts, provide global technical leadership for the introduction of new interventions, and build sustainable TB programs at the country level through the release of a new Tuberculosis IQC. This new TB IQC will implement and scale up all components of the STOP TB Strategy, including interventions to slow the emergence and spread of MDR-TB and XDR-TB. Task Orders stemming from this award will support work in countries to build sustainable TB control programs that achieve USAID’s and the STOP TB Partnership’s targets. In addition to scaling-up proven interventions, this award will provide a mechanism for contracting discrete global health technical leadership and technical assistance as needed.
