- Description
- USAID/Ethiopia announces its intention to solicit proposals for the implementation of the USAID/ETHIOPIA Urban Gardens Program for HIV/AIDS Affected Women & Children. This new Urban Gardens Program for HIV/AIDS Affected Women & Children is designed to improve the nutritional status and income of households in Ethiopia, affected by or living with HIV/AIDS, through income generating activities. This activity will focus on services to expand urban garden opportunities for low income HIV/AIDS-affected households, particularly those headed by females and orphans. This program will also provide access to additional services, including health and education, for the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) beneficiaries in the program. Through this activity, beneficiaries are expected to acquire the skills and means to enable them to: increase food production; enhance household food availability; promote consumption of a balanced nutritious diet; improve family income through the sale of food surplus; and realize alternative livelihoods. By building on experience to date, this activity will expand areas where urban garden support for HIV-affected households and OVC are available and increase the number of beneficiaries. Five components of this activity are planned: 1) Technical support in the development of urban gardens; 2) Technical support in accessing health and educational services for OVC; 3) Building the capacity of local Non-Government Organizations; 4) Strengthening referrals and linkages between Food and Income Generation, health, education, and Care and Treatment services; and 5) Management and Evaluation Information Systems. Implementation is expected to include partnerships with on-going efforts to support OVC, prevention efforts, community-based palliative care and treatment programs, and HIV counseling and testing outreach services. Success accomplishing these activity components is defined as having created additional income-generating opportunities and improved access to health and education services for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and their families. Measurement of that success must be evidence-based. USAID/Ethiopia intends to post the Request for Proposals (RFP) on June 20, 2008.
